Oil extraction
In earlier days, edible oil was extracted using a traditional ox-mill known as ‘Gana’ in the local language. Oil was extracted from coconut, gingely, groundnut and other sources through this huge mechanical device which was operated with the help of bullocks. The device was so designed as to automatically separate the oil and cake using a unique process. Modern more efficient mechanized oil extraction techniques have rendered the traditional ox-mill obsolete and it is hardly in use anywhere.
The Oil Processing unit at Pilikula has a working model of this type of mill and live demonstration is given everyday, which is watched with awe by spectators. At present, only Gingeli oil is being produced and it is sold for medical / health purposes.
